520	3		_aThe aging of the population, not just in the United States but worldwide, will be the greatest force affecting health care, affecting society as a whole, in our lifetime.  In addition, the conditions that often require surgery (atherosclerosis, degenerative joint disease, prostate disease, cataracts, biliary disease, and others) increase in incidence with increasing age. With a few exceptions, all surgeons must become Geriatric Surgeons. This edition builds upon the foundation of the first and second editions of Principles and Practice of Geriatric Surgery, volumes separated by a decade of experience in the field, in a format that is both comprehensive and fluid.  The combination of print and electronic versions will promote more rapid up-dating of chapters as new information appears. The Third Edition opens with general principles.
