He was born 02 July 1869 in Chain Lake Settlement, Cass County, Michigan, United States; spent a year at Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina; began his own efforts as a poet; accepted a call to enter the ministry in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church in 1898; in 1902 published his best known work The Black Cat Club; appointed in 1915 to a parish in West Chester, Pennsylvania; in 1916 he published his autobiography, In spite of the Handicap; best known as a dialect poet; died 12 February 1917 in West Chester, Pennsylvania, United States)
