Boulton is a retired Professor of History from Stevenson University in Maryland where he taught for over twenty-five years. He received his PhD in history from the College of William and Mary (1991). The primary focus of his research is the cultural and intellectual history of the United States. He was drawn to the study of Thucydides for the light that Thucydides' work sheds on the thinking of the nation's Founders and particularly on their ideas on democracy and national identity. He is the author of a biography of the architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (Rizzoli, 1993), and articles for The William and Mary Quarterly, American Quarterly, and American Heritage Magazine)
