He attended DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana for two years before transferring to Northwestern University, where he served as the sports editor for The Daily Northwestern. He graduated from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism in 1960. He is President of his family-owned publication company, Crain Communications, and serves as editor-in-chief of Advertising Age and several other publications.)
